The 3rd University of Tokyo Fair @LaLaport KASHIWANOHA was held on September 26–27. As part of the event, Associate Professor Naomi Shimpo gave a lecture to approximately 30 high school students on September 27, titled “Why Do People Farm in Cities? Exploring the Relationship between Urban Development and Agriculture.”

During the lecture, various initiatives involving urban gardens in Japan and other countries, both past and present, were introduced through numerous photos and videos. The characteristics of the garden locations were explained in relation to urban structure, and various cases included gardens with cafés and even gardens created within cemeteries. The lecture also highlighted the diverse roles that urban gardens can play beyond food production, including environmental education, disaster risk reduction, and bringing people together.

After the lecture, students asked questions that also touched on the practical management of urban gardens, such as how activities on farmland are funded.
