Data for 1995 MEA

The MEA economic data are constructed by Kurima and Ohkawara (2001) .

Employment, Population, and Area Data:

  • Units: Persons
  • The MEA data are obtained by summing municipality-level data.

Production Data:

  • Units: Million Yen, 1990 base
  • Annual Report on Prefectural Account has production data only for 47 prefectures and major cities (11 up to 1988 and 12 from 1989).
  • The prefecture level data are allocated to municipalities by proportional allotment and then aggregate them to obtain MEA data.
  • The production data are available for 14 industrial categories (12 industries, the public sector, and others). The output of each industry is allocated to each municipality using the employment share of the industry.
  • In prefectures that include the major cities, the data for the remaining part are allocated to municipalities other than those cities.

Private capital:

  • Units: Million Yen, 1990 base
  • Available only for prefectures
  • The private capital in each MEA is obtained by proportional allotment according to production shares in manufacturing and non-manufacturing industries (instead of employment shares).

Social overhead capital:

  • Units: Million Yen, 1990 base
  • Available only for prefectures
  • The four types of social overhead capital have different allotment procedures.
    1. Social overhead capital for agriculture, forestry, and fishery:
allocated according to the production shares in the agricultural sector.
    2. Social overhead capital for the industrial infrastructure:
allocated according to the production shares in the manufacturing industry.
    3. Social overhead capital in telecommunication and railway industries:
      allocated according to total production
    4. Social overhead capital for residents (parks and neighborhood streets, etc.):
      allocated according to population.
