Session 1: ENERGY AND URBAN SPACE: Energy Active Settlements

Speaker: Dr. Claudia Yamu (Vienna University of Technology)

Abstract

In this workshop research will be presented and discussed conducted on energy demand and requirements, consumer’s behaviour, policies and urban scenarios. We will shed light on current strategies carried out, modelling & available data for scenario development, GIS Web application and civic-engagement. Focus is the energy-aware development of Austrian cities and towns.

Short biographical note

Claudia Yamu is Head of the Spatial Simulation Lab (SimLab), Department of Planning at Vienna University of Technology. She holds a PhD in Architecture (Austria/USA), a PhD in the double major Geography and Regional Planning (France) and is Charrette certified from Harvard University. Claudia is member of the American Planning Association (APA), AESOP’s complexity and planning group (Association of European Schools of Planning). Currently Claudia is a JSPS Fellow (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science). She has international practice experience.

Session 2: GIS, SPATIAL ANALYSIS, GEOSIMULATION AND BIG DATA ANALYSIS

Speaker: Dr. Yan Liu (The University of Queensland)

Abstract

In this workshop I will present my research in two different but related fields. The first part relates to complex systems modelling and geo-simulation focusing on cellular automata (CA) modelling to describe, understand, model and predict environment and human change processes and interactions. The value of this research is to advance the constitution of these systems and assist with informed and evidence based decision support. I will present examples how CA-based geo-simulation approaches have been developed and applied to model urban growth. In the second part, I will present some of my recent work on travel behaviour analysis using Smart card data.

Short Biographical Note:

Dr Yan LIU is a Senior Lecturer in Geographical Information Science at the University of Queensland (UQ), Australia. She holds a PhD in Geographical Science from the University of Queensland (Australia) and leads a research cluster in Spatial Modelling and Geosimulation at the School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Management at UQ. Prior to joining UQ, Yan worked at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (China), The University of Southern Queensland (Australia) and Nanyang Technology University (Singapore). Yan also serves as the Vice President of the Queensland Chinese Association of Scientists and Engineers (QCASE). She is currently visiting Professor Yukio Sadahiro at the Center of Spatial Information System as part of her sabbatical leave.
